The Sweeney Memorial Public Library, Kilkee, was founded in the 1950s with money bequeathed from Dr. William J. Sweeney, Union City, New Jersey whose grandfather was born in Kilkee in 1833. A newly refurbished library, theatre and gallery, renamed as Cultúrlann Sweeney, was opened on the 27th of February 2012 by Jimmy Deenihan, T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs.
Culturlann Sweeney Kilkee runs a Film Club all year round with a special children’s programme in July and August annually.
Occasional events take place throughout the year with a full summer line up in July and August that features film, theatre, music concerts and supports local events such as the Kilkee Civic Trust talks and the Kilkee Playwrights Festival.
We run a year round gallery programme. If interested in exhibiting please read our gallery guidelines and contact firstname.lastname@example.org to be placed on a waiting list.
A permanent collection of watercolours by the Rev. William O’Brien are on display in the meeting room.
