When sourcing sites to paint, we discovered a bit about the history of these doors. They lead into passages that went under the road and into the basements of the buildings across the street. This car park used to be a parking space for horse and carriages. The owners, rather than have to cross the street, would simply pop home through the doors and up into their houses via the cellar. Handy! Also very practical given the typical Irish weather. It is a quirky and slightly hidden spot, and naturally, once we’d heard of their history, we decided to paint the doors with horses looking out over their stable doors.
