Clare Arts Office commissioned three local artists in 2021 to mark the Decade of Centenaries in County Clare.

We were delighted to support the artists to interpret local historical events by creating artistic work that provides a platform to encourage reflection and the consideration of issues, both past and present, which may be challenging, difficult and sometimes deeply personal.

Funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Community Strand of the Decade of Centenaries Programme, the commissions aimed to ensure that events are remembered at community level in a respectful, measured and non-partisan manner.

The three artists were Tim Collins, Marie Connole and Dermot Petty.

Marie Connole has created a series of oil portraits depicting five ‘Irrepressible Women of Clare’.

  • Peg Barrett
  • Georgina Frost
  • Kathleen Griffin
  • Beatrice O’Brien
  • Kathleen Talty

Through the experiences of Clare women from various backgrounds the project aims to develop a greater understanding of the events and consequences of the Revolutionary Years in Ireland (1913-1923).

These portraits will feature at the launch, taking place as part of Clare County Library’s History Week, along with a film commissioned to explore the process behind the work of all three selected artists.
