The little park where this artwork is situated is right in front of the recognisable Maid of Erin monument, which sits high up in the middle of the roundabout. The life-size monument represents the personification of Erin, Ireland.
The Negative Space mural by Robert Downey is a contemporary depiction of this personification. It portrays a modern young woman in ordinary clothing, in a pose nostalgic of formal historical portrayals of power. We wanted to juxtapose our contemporary Maid with the historic version which you can see up high behind her. We hope you get a chance to see our Maid of Erin in real life, it’s worth a stroll down to take a look.
